How To Make Easy Oat Milk? 

Oat milk is easy dairy-free milk that you can make at home in just minutes. Oat milk is quite tasty and creamy, assuming you enjoy the flavor of oatmeal. You can put it in your coffee, and you can buy a carton from the store or even pick up a pint of oat milk ice cream. It’s not like other non-dairy milk recipes; this one doesn’t require any special equipment. As you don’t need to soak the oats, it just takes some minutes to prepare. 

All that you need is 5 minutes, a handful of whole rolled oats, filtered water, a fine mesh strainer, and a powerful blender. Oat milk has taken place by storm over some years and surged in popularity. You’ve probably seen it at the local market or any coffee shop, which is no surprise because this is one of the creamiest dairy-free milk with just the precise amount of sweetness and perfect for those with nut sensitivities.

  • Start by soaking a cup of oats in water for 15 minutes.

  • Fact: Oat milk inevitably tastes like oats. It reminds me of cereal sometimes. Since it’s not entirely neutral in flavor, it will work better in some recipes other than others. That is, if you look for a more neutral milk alternative, you can try cashew milk.
  • The store-bought oat milk foams up good. This store-bought oat milk contains some additives that help it foam (homemade does not). That’s why oat milk is becoming popular in coffee shops as a dairy-free milk alternative. It’s been fun using store-bought oat milk in the new milk frother.
  •  On the other hand, homemade oat milk thickens when heated. This is very undesirable, as it leaves an oatmeal-like film at the bottom of the pot. You can consider making homemade hot chocolate with oat milk, and we’ve been attempting to find a solution for this issue but didn’t have any result, unfortunately.

 

 

Is oat milk healthy?

Oats are nutritious, so yes. Oat milk is oats which are diluted in water so that oat milk can offer a lower level of nutrients and also fewer calories than a full bowl of oatmeal. And nutrition is relative. The recipe differs from most store-bought options as it is free of additives and preservatives, including added vitamins and minerals.




 

How to make oat milk not slimy?

  • When we over-blend, the oat milk becomes slimy in texture, so it is recommended to blend for about 30-45 seconds.
  • Soak the oats, which can make the oats more prone to sliminess. Add it to the blender with water and start blending.
  • Sometimes heating the oat milk can make it a bit slimy, so we don’t recommend it.
  •  We recommend straining twice to remove all the excess starch, which can lend to a slimy texture.
  • We recommend to strain it with a towel or clean t-shirt as nut milk bags and fine mesh strainers let too much pulp.

 

Can we use steel-cut or quick oats to make oat milk?

In our experience, rolled oats are the way to go. Steel-cut oats are unprocessed and make less creamy milk. On the other hand, Rolled oats are just right and make nice and creamy oat milk. Quick-cooking oats are too finely processed and tend to create slimmer oat milk. 

Is oat milk gluten-free?

It is controversial as some consider even gluten-free oats problematic for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. But considering the experience, certified gluten-free oats make oat milk gluten-free. 




How to store oat milk

When the blending and straining are done, pour the oat milk into an airtight jar as the mason jars or juice jars. After that, put and store it in the fridge for nearly a week.

Without any stabilizers or emulsifiers, the milk can separate in the fridge, which is normal. It would be best if it gets a good stir before drinking. oat Milk

 

Ways and tips to use oat milk.

Homemade oat milk can work great with baked goods, cold beverages smoothies. Although it’s not the best option for hot drinks as it may thicken up and become slightly slimy again. Because it lacks fat (unlike nut milk), it doesn’t foam well either. I did try adding a little coconut oil, but it still didn’t froth well (in my opinion).




When adding a sweetener to your oat milk, I recommend maple syrup rather than a date. Because the blend time is so short, a pitted date may not thoroughly blend into the liquid.
